Why should security companies be looking to invest in Virtual Reality (VR)?
What is VR or HMD?
A head-mounted display (HMD) is a pair of goggles that you strap on your head for a fully immersive Virtual Reality (VR) experience. Each eye is shown in a slightly different view, fooling your brain into thinking you are inside a virtual 3D world. Wearers experience a heightening sense of presence, scale, and depth.
This virtual world can be explored from any angle, simply by moving your head or eyes. The HMD tracks movements and the view of the virtual world adjusts instantly.
Now that you know, you may think okay, so what are the benefits to Security Consultants and our Clients? Why should WE invest in VR?
Security Consultancies would benefit from Virtual Reality (VR) in several ways: firstly, in the industry of the built environment, it is vital to be up to date with the latest technology. Many firms lack in prioritising investing within technology when it comes to budgeting. These decisions ultimately may cause strain to clients and staff if not thinking about the long term goal. Keeping up to date with technology will allow us to spread the word of the importance of security to clients we haven’t dealt with before or clients that have found it challenging to work with us due to the lack of technology compatibility.
As the world moves in the direction of artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR), we believe that it is crucial we move along with it, not be left behind.
Some of the brightest minds may find it hard to visualise a space from looking at 2D plans, sections, and elevations. This is where VR would step in: creating a space to look at in detail, move around, get a first-hand feel in order to form a much more solidified consultancy delivery. This would ultimately increase staff satisfaction to know where and what they are recommending is being implemented into the design, as they had thought.
“The incredible thing about the technology is that you feel like you’re present in another place with other people. People who try it say it’s different from anything they’ve ever experienced in their lives.” — Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Facebook
VR would be a small investment to increase profit margins; this has been proven by many architectural companies who moved on from plans and 3D drawings. They adapted VR into all their design processes and have reaped the benefits.
As there is and always will be many stages within the design and planning process, there is also feedback thrown forward and backward between businesses and clients. The case is the same for security consultancies. We have to allow our clients to consider our recommendations and provide feedback on what they believe is necessary; with VR, we can make this process much more straightforward and useful to the client. We can highlight many things, such as how the lighting would create a safer space and prevent anti-social behavior and how considering Secured by Design principles would make a safer development while helping the client achieve a greater understanding of our views.
VR would help us as a team to understand each individual detail the designer has implemented into the design, giving us a greater understanding of the space and design, allowing us to feel how it feels to walk through that space, as this is what we do. We visual how people would feel and behave in spaces, how they would want to feel, and how we can help change dark spaces to vibrant open plans.
In conclusion, VR could be a vital asset for companies who want to be ahead of the game in the long term and would like to streamline their services overall for the best services, results, and returns.
